Batman DVD: Played several scenes, mainly the one following the press conference near the beginning, Nicholson speaks to Jerry Hall. Very strong color, accurate flesh tones, sharp blacks. Noticed (as in a prior post) digital artifacting in background areas of wooden area in right of scene. Batman LD: Played scene again. Color in comparison very washed, flesh tones much pinker, image clarity grainier, with a degree of haze. Odd enough, noticed the SAME "digital" artifacting in backgrounds. I have concluded this to be a result of the original source material, not either software defect. Reds and browns in the picture yeilded harsh noise. Conclusion: The DVD had STRIKINGLY better image quality. The Ld was pressed several years ago, and I'm sure this is partly to blame. Widescreen matte at 1:85:1 was identical. In looking back and forth between the two, the DVD version won with a clear victory. Too bad that the print itself seems to be poor from the get go, lots of noise and garbage going on in both versions. More as they arrive...
