The Mask DVD: Viewed a dark scene when the Mask is first seen by Carey, he drives up in his car on the bridge. Second scene is where Diaz arrives at the bank (hey now) wearing a vibrant red dress. The overall quality of this disc is easily better than either Warber title. The dark scene rendered flawless blacks, and a constant, well balanced blue. Within this, flesh tones remained clear and accurate during the scene. In the bank, Diaz' dress is vibrant red, free from any noise. You can make out subtle (and not so subtle) variations and texture in the dress, and accurate variances in light to dark areas of shadows upon the dresses curves. Overall picture was flawless. Mask LD: 1st THX version (not the AC3 one) Accurate colors, somewhat less strong than that on the dvd. Flesh tones in the bank scene seemed to appear white and pale versus the tans of the other version. Diaz' dress in a solid, oversaturated red. The dark scene had rich blacks, though noise was evident in the dark areas, and the blues tended toward purple. Overall image quality is good, clean and sharp. Conclusion: The DVD version edges the LD out. Both versions are very clean, but the dvd version wins on color accuracy. The laserdisc seemed to have an abundance of noise happening in the darker scenes. Widescreen framing was identical. More as they arrive...
