Webmaster's Corner

  • May 5, 1997
    • Welcome to a new feature here at the PlayStation Galleria. Once in a while I have comments or info that don't really fit under the News category. It could be commentaries on trends in the industry, answers to commonly asked questions, events, or info totally unrelated to the Sony PlayStation. I'll be posting such info to this page, although not on a regular basis. I'll mention any updates on the News page.

    • Let me explain what happened to this site today. But first, a little background. I've been up and running since Feb'95. I started small on a university computer, then later moved to my own server. Over time the number of pages have grown quite significantly. Ever since I started, I've used Notepad or Write to do my pages. Thus, whenever there is a change in a release date or a game is released, a lot of work is needed to update all the affected pages. Also, because of the increasing number of pages, a number of inconsistencies have crept into my website. A rating may be different for the same game on different pages, formats on the games pages differ, released games might still be listed as unreleased, publishers pages are rarely updated and upcoming games don't show up under their respective categories.

    • That all changed today. Over the last few weeks I've been developing a local database to generate all the pages for me. So now, when a record (game) is updated in the database, all pages that has that game on it, are automatically updated. I've spent a lot of hours getting it all togehter, I hope you'll enjoy the improvements. Today is the first day the automatically generated pages are online.

    • So what changed? All game pages have been updated to the new format. All category pages have been updated and divided into sub-categories. All games on the Upcoming Software page have been included in the various category pages. All publishers pages have been updated etc.

    • Since I'm running this site by myself, a database has become a necessity in order to keep my site updated. It allows me to concentrate more on the content, instead of updating endless pages every time a new tidbit surfaces. I owe Brian Preble at Secrets of the Sega Sages thanks for getting me started in Access.

    • There are probably still some bugs here and there. I've still got tons of work to do, I just finished with phase one of three. (The publishers pages are very bare, will hopefully get to filling them in soon.) Should you see any problems, please email me!

    • I've just entered my last semester in my university experience. I've got some heavy programming classes that require a lot of time, but hopefully I'll still get time to update these pages on a daily basis.

    • One last reminder: Click on the ads! (Even if you've done it before... Maybe something has changed? ;-)

    P.S.
Anybody else excited about Fifth Element?

Well, the movie was OK, but certainly not "Star Wars for the 90's..."
