Launched in May 1994, Sony Computer Entertainment of America (SCEA) is a business unit of Sony Electronic Publishing. SCEA's charter is to market and distribute the PlayStation video game system in the United States and Canada. In addition to hard ware sales, marketing and distribution, the company engineers, develops, and publishes game software and associated peripherals under its own label. It is also responsible for third-party video game software licensing in North America.

The PlayStation was created because of the company's belief that consumers were ready for the "next generation" of systems that more truly reflect the experience of arcade gaming. The CD-based videogame system creates a true 3-D environment for gamers with high speed parallel processing and enhanced memory storage. As a CD-based system, PlayStation allows just-in-time inventory, providing superior cost-control and significantly less manufacturing time than cartridge-based systems.

SCEA has assembled an impressive management team with substantial experience in the video game, toy and relevant industries:

• Stephen (Steve) Race -- President. Mr. Race is responsible for the day-to-day operations of SCEA including management, licensing and software release planning.

• Jim Whims -- Senior Vice President. Mr. Whims is responsible for overseeing all sales relations in the U.S. and Canada.

• William (Chip) Herman -- Vice President of Marketing. Mr. Herman oversees SCEA's marketing, public relations, advertising and promotional activities.

• Clyde Grossman -- Vice President of Software Development. Mr. Grossman directs the company's in-house development teams of software engineers, artists and animators, audio engineers and producers.

• Bernie Stolar -- Vice President of Business Development. Mr. Stolar oversees the development of new partnerships and third party relations.

• Alden H.W. (Stretch) Andersen -- Vice President of Operations. Mr. Andersen is responsible for overseeing product planning, procurement, quality control and distribution.

• Harry (Butch) Freedhoff -- General Manager, Canadian Operations. Mr. Freedhoff is responsible for establishing the Canadian market. He is based in Toronto.
