More than 60 new video game publishers and developers to create software for PlayStation video game system
E3, LOS ANGELES, May 10, 1995 -- Reflecting an unprecedented show of support for its new video game system, Sony Computer Entertainment of America (SCEA), is announcing partnerships with 67 new licensees who have linked with the company since the Winter C onsumer Electronics Show (WCES), held this January in Las Vegas, to create and publish video game titles for the PlayStation. These new additions bring the number of game developers and publishers who are working with SCEA to more than 160. Worldw ide, over 300 developers and publishers have signed to be PlayStation licensees.
"To become the most popular game system you need more than the best hardware. You also have to offer the hottest games," said Steve Race, president of SCEA. "Just one look at who we are partnering with makes it clear why we are so enthusi astic and confident about our launch."
Some of the industry's leading publishers and developers who are currently creating software for the PlayStation include Acclaim, Capcom, Crystal Dynamics, Electronic Arts, ImageSoft, Interplay, Konami, LucasArts, Mindscape, Namco Hometek, Psygnosis, SSI , Time Warner Interactive, Viacom and Virgin.
"It's significant that virtually all of the most important gaming software companies are working on games for PlayStation," said Bernie Stolar, SCEA vice president of business development. ³We know that these licensees have their 'A' teams working on PlayStation, and that ours is the system of choice for these developers. That says a lot for what PlayStation customers can expect."
SCEA and its third party partners will be introducing titles from a variety of genres at the launch of the PlayStation this fall, including sports, adventure, simulation, fighting, action and puzzle games.
In Japan, where the PlayStation was introduced last December, there are 270 licensees who have signed agreements with Sony Computer Entertainment. Some 25 titles are currently available in Japan, including one of the country's best-selling titles, Namco
