Alien Trilogy
Quick Review from the Net
This is my first review of a game, so it might be a little rough
around the edges. First off I would like to say that Alien Trilogy is NOT a
Doom clone. If it is, than every fighting game is a Street Fighter 2 clone,
every shooter is a R-Type clone, every platform game is a Super Mario Bros
clone, and every sports game is a clone of the game before it! Do you
understand what I am saying here? Alien Trilogy is another really good first
person game. That does not make it a clone!
Let start with the story. The game is setup into three main
sections. The first two are based on Aliens, and Alien3. The last one is
more a sequel to
Alien3, but without Ripley dying at the end of Alien3. The game starts off after
the marines just got there butts kicked by Aliens, and Ripley goes into save
them. Or maybe she just went in to kick some Alien butt! Since you never see
the
marines again. After that the story kind of goes off on its own. At the
start of each level you are sent a message telling you what needs to be done
to complete the mission. Examples: Clear a path for the marines, find the
secret alien lair, collect id tags from the prisoners, so you count for all
the bodies. We don't them to make any more of those nasty aliens. This
mission setup is a nice change from the overly used find the key, kill the
bad boys, and exit the level.
Ok, so it has a good idea to the game, but how does it look? Well,
it looks pretty darn good. It looks better than Doom, and runs as fast. At
least real close. It also has a better 3D world. With slanted floors, and 3D
items. The only real flaw with the graphics are some of the aliens. They
seem to have kind of a jagged edge to them, and not enough frames of
animation when they die. This may seem kind of minor, but it could have been
avoided. The game also has a really good CG intro, and the best death scenes
ever.
Alright, so the story and the graphics are good, but what about the
sound? Well...it's perfect. Well almost. Most of the sounds seem straight
from the movies, and they fit in just perfect. The music is also really
good, and helps recreate
the feel of the movies.
So last but not least. How does it play? Fairly well. Ripley
controls pretty good, and doesn't seem to get caught up on doorways or other
items. This has been a major problem with other 3D games. The only bad side
to your control it that your aim is little left from the center, but once
you get over that you will be ok.
Here is a quick break down of the review, and some other information about
the game. All scores are on scale of 1-100. 1 bad, 50 fair, 100 perfect.
