College Slam
Review from the Net
This will be a very short review. College Slam can be summed up in one word: lame. Why the wizards at Acclaim took so long to release this game is a mystery to me. It is basically -- wait, no it is -- NBA Jam. Same engine, same feel. You get to play with only two members of your chosen team at the same time, not the full five, although you do get to rename your players and save your stats to a memory card. As can be expected, the gameplay is nowhere near what could be called a simulation. You run up and down the court, knocking down your opponents and slamming the basketball from unreal angles and heights. You can become on fire by making three baskets in a row, find codes to do interesting things, play with special-value hot spots...stop me if you have heard this already. Hey, I loved NBA Jam when it first appeared. NBA Jam Tournament Edition was also fun. However, sometimes you can get too much of a good thing. College Slam is simply that -- way too much Jam from Acclaim. In closing, if you have never played NBA Jam, you probably will get a kick out of the speed and arcade feel of College Slam. For most of us, though, I feel the thrill of dunking from midcourt and entering all the special codes is getting a little old. My advice is to rent the game first before blowing $55 on it to see if the "Jam" magic is still there. Otherwise, I advise waiting until NBA Live '96 or Total NBA are released to catch the basketball fever.
