Crash Bandicoot
PlayStation Review from the Net
The intro: What appears to be a real time rendered intro of a mad scientist zapping our hero and failing to achieve his goals. the voice acting is typically overkill and cheesy but it fits the mad scientist theme. Crash jumps out a window, looks down , says "uh oh" in a cute cartoon voice that I wish was present throughout the game and then falls. The grahpics are sharp, dark yet colorful, and definitely free of glaring glitches. The options: Music volume and sound volume...its a platformer, what'd you expect? The Music: Straight out of our beloved Sony sound processor, this stuff ranges from just noise, to some pretty catchy little melodies. It sounds like SNES stuff on some stages, yet distictly better on some (the boulder music and the native levels). Not bad, not good, but in Dolby surround, it sounds good enough to leave on. The sound effects: Perfect cartoon stuff. The WING as fruits fly, the whistle as you fall down a cliff. Makes you chuckle as you endlessly screw up. The gameplay: Jump jump run spin jump. Its a platformer. But I will say that the required jumps get harder and harder. For example ...they introduce you to a new obstacle. A 3-d pillar in a gorge. You jump on it, its stable, you jump off and move on. Next pillar.. it isnt stable, next pillar it moves, next pillar there are 5 rotating about a center pillar, next pillar there are 5 rotating about a center pillar with one dropping out once and a while. Needless to say the programmers put in a cool learning curve for each level, and the jumps and actions you can see you must do will once and a while cause you to scream, THE GAME MAKERS ARE EVIL!!! as you run around screaming. The graphics: I cant believe this is playstation. I mean, the psx is a nice machine, and its graphics are nice, but I never thought it'd produce stuff this diverse and solid. It just looks solid. Your main character is cleverly put together to look non polygonal as well as the ground in most levels. Even the texture maps look pretty good up close. Very very very clean, very very very glitch free. Easily replaces Tobal No. 1 as my favorite game to wonder at the graphics. The extras: Secrets galore, hell half my college dorm floor has a save on my memory cards that are now stuffed with little orange heads. And it has a lot of levels, each one harder than the last (usually) and each one offering a new challenge. I will say that the stages have styles....there is a boulder chasing you style, a temple style, a jumgle style, a post apocolypse style, a native fortress style, a techno style, and the mad scientist theme. The bosses: Normally I wouldnt point this out, but the main guys in this are very unique and fun to beat. The first guy is beat with the standard jump on his head three times bit, but the second guy you have to time a dynamite to explode next to him , the third you must launch rocks into from across a river. The fourth guy has a tommygun, which causes you to seek cover and then attack when his gun jams. The fifth guy is by far my favorite though, a mad scientist who throw exploding test tubes, slime creatures and than proceeds to drink his potion and become a monster. Very cool. The verdict: I dont really like platformers, but I bought this for the benefit of my college cronies. I must say I like this game. I like it a lot. The puzzles are hard enough to not bore me, and the graphics alone led me to want to get to the next level just to see it. Some would call this eye candy, but as the game relies on hellishly presice jump timing, most of the time you cant notice. The dolby surround sounds nice enough...even though the music is not real music (ie redbook) The comparison: MY 2 cents and only my two cents on the Nights, Mario, Crash bit it this. Mario looks great, but lacks complexity in graphics. Sure that wall looks nice, but its a WALL. Crash and Nights both are stuffed with massive amounts of extraneous background that makes it as fun to watch as to play. Mario is exploratory, Crash shows you exactly what you have to do and just challenges you to try and do it. Nights has a distinct advantage in gameplay in my opinion as the flying and looping is a whole new gameplay to perfect. But, honestly, Crash just looks more solid. Just as solid as Mario, and much more detailed. Final Result: Crash is a great edition to a game library, especially is you like to brag about your reactions and timing. Percentage:92% Stars:4.5 Its fun, but not perfect of course....
