Cyberspeed
Review from the Net
Picked up Cyberspeed at EB on Friday and just wanted to write down my first impressions. Cyberspeed is not a hovercraft racing game a la Wipeout. You could have surmised it was from the pictures but it is not. It is a rail racing game. The racing craft hang down from a rail which is suspended over a track. The object of the game is to beat all the other craft hanging down from the rail by passing them all as you move along this hanging rail. To assist in the process of passing the other racing craft you get an unlimited use but not 100% effective gun that shoots balls of electrical energy, you get 4 speed-up powerups, you get 4 lock on missiles, and you get mines. You can rotate 360 degrees around the rail you are hanging from. There are 9 tracks to chose from although you must win the early tracks to get to the later ones. There are 3 modes of play: racing, practice, and time trials. In practice you can practice one track ahead of the one you are currently racing on (a reasonable compromise between only allowing you to play the current track and allowing you to practice all of them). The tracks are somewhat roller-coaster like. You can increase your effectiveness in racing by pushing your craft towards the inside as you round sharp turns. I am up to the 4th track. In some tracks you can switch through alternate paths as in Wipeout. You do this by pressing one of the control pad buttons to switch tracks. I am on the 4th track which is somewhat tough due to obstacles on the track. In one branch you have to fly upside-down to pass the obstacles. In another you must fly sideways. You can pick up new powerups (of the aforementioned weapons and speedups) along the way though it is often difficult to anticipate them because of your speed. You can get knocked about and turned around the wrong way by weapons or opponents and you can get back on track by using a turn button on the controller. The graphics are very good. Quite fast with cool looking tracks and virtually no pop-up that I have seen so far. I was initially a little disappointed as I expected a hovercraft racing game but after having played it for a while I find I have been drawn back to play it again and again. I am not sure it has the long term playability of a game like Wipeout but it is a lot of fun and I am enjoying it. Regards...Marc Baime
