Destruction Derby
Review from the Net
Magazine reviewers tend to call this game a fenderbender, that is as understating as calling Pamela Anderson cute. This is total carnage, drive em till em burn in flames. Instead of simply drive to win the races you have to mind the score, that means if you only finish as number one and haven t been smashing your oppnents you might be beaten to the podium. The more damage you cause to your opponents, the more points you will recieve. If you hit him lightly, it s two points and if you make him spin 360 degrees, then you get ten points. When your enemy is pouring out grey smoke, then if you hit him you will execute the son of a gun. A kill makes ten points. If you choose to drive the wrecking race you will be able to double all points if you hit the leader. In the wrecking game you have to get as many points as possible to be the winner and be able to advance to next level, if you re driving the championship mode. If you want a pure racing game, then stock car is your choice. Unfortunately, as a racing game Destruction Derby doesn t quite do the trick. Namcos Ridge Racer is better in that catagory, unbelevably even Daytona USA is a better racing game! The Destruction Derby, which takes place in the bowl, is the part of the game beeing found on the Sony demo disk. Here it s really smash n cracsh time, the only thing you re supposed to do is KILL your opponents. The most points win. To be able to be a winner, you must be a smart driver. As the damage will increase on your car aswell, you will have to drive in reverse. This will make your car last twice as long, plus the rear is not as sencetive as the front, you know that s where the engine is to be found. The game contains four different views, the easiest is the one farthest away from the vehicle, if you choose tho drive fro m inside you won t see anything when driving in reverse or when your opponents are aiming for you. Then again, if you want to be the winner in the time trials, the in car view is a, oh yeah, winnner. As a two player game Destruction Derby is one of the best things ever, it for starters contains a tournament, which the lack of kinda spoiled the link up mode in Wipeout. Not since Electronic Arts NH L hockey games we have had this much fun, which probably explained why we went to bed, separetly you pervert, around five AM. The game is also a treat as a one player game. If you feel like the wrecking race is to easy and the guys in the bowl are just a bunch of pathetic loosers, give Total Destruction a shot. This makes all 19 opponents target on you and you only. A pretty hectic situation. In two player mode you have nine cars against you, and nine aginst your friend. Everytime you hit one, he will be a born again person and chase after your friend instead of you. But your friend will also be converting enemis. Wipeout might be a faster and slicker game, Destruction Derby kinda gives slowdowns a face, but the fun of racing two player makes this a winner. Wipeouts graphics are better, but if you look at the cars as they re being smashed you will find the most beautiful texture mapping there is. With this title, and Wipeout, Psygnisis really shows who s the boss. The European, Liverpool, company is nevertheless dissappering from the market, but fear not you addicted gamers, the re just getting a new name. - Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE). Destruction Derby: 9/9.
