GRAPHICS:
****************
The graphics of this game are very impressive... considering the amount
needed to keep the game going at its FAST pace!!!!! Most all the graphics are
polygons and are drawn on the fly!! So because of this, the game has a more
polygon based, "BLOCKY LOOK" to it. Not to say this takes away from the
game...
But the graphics.. depending on which one of the three main levels you are
playing on differ in their quality and smooth flowing apprearance.
Generally speaking... the game (as with all games) has a little drop out and
flicker BUT its not an amount to get annoyed about..
I did notice that the camera rotation in the SECOND SECTION (Die Harder) and
3rd Section (Die H. w/Vengeance) were a little hurky jerky but not too bad.
Light sourcing, texture mapping, shading are done well throughout the whole
game. Explosions look impressive with bright white, red and orange hues.. also when
you grease a terrorist or run over (with a car) an unsuspecting civilian the blood
splatters all over the place and in the case of the car.... on the windshield.!!
(gory but a lot of fun ) I'm also using an S-video plug so... the images can be
too crisp at times. (s-video users.. will know what I mean)
****************
GAME PLAY:
****************
The game consists of THREE MAIN sections... each following the storylines of
the Trilogy...
You are allowed to select any one of the three from the start..
You don't have to work your way up the the 3 section.
Each SECTION has its own seperate Final zone.
DIE HARD - Save hostages from high rise building.
DIE HARDER - Stop terrorists from freeing South American Drug Lord.
DIE HARD W/ A VENGEANCE - Stop terrorists from blowing up New York
THINK LOTS OF EXPLOSIONS!!!!!!!
THINK LOTS O BLOOD!
DIE HARD is set up similar to FADE TO BLACK / RESIDENT EVIL...
Its third person perspective at an angle of about 35-45 degrees up, behind the
player. You the player explore the different floors and areas of the building in
search of hostages and trying not kill the hostages by mistake.
A nice feature of THIS SECTION is that since the viewing angle is up about 40
degrees.. when the player is walking down a tight corridor or in a room.. the game
makes the nearest wall or room to player transparent so that you can see whats
going on around the corner or in the next room! It doesn't take away from the game,
it really opens the field of view .. so that you don't have tooo much of a closed in
feeling.
On screen enemy radar Health meter-if it reaches zero .. you're dead.. no extra lives.
Weapons status and time
Score
Possible weapons / items in THIS level include:
John Mclean's standard issue 15 shot pistol (unlimited bullets)
Shotgun
Assault rifle
M60 machine gun ( W O W !!)
MP5 Sub-machine gun ( F U N !!)
Smoke/explosive/flash band grenades
Various health up items
DIE HARDER is the Second Section and is a 1st person perspective shooter (a la
VIRTUA COP).
The movement of the player is controlled by the game...what you have to do is
just point and shoot using the standard controller (with crosshairs) or using
KONAMI's GUN... {{YOU MUST HAVE THE GUN TO FULLY APPRECIATE THIS SECTION OF THE
GAME!!!!}} it is simply FUN FUN FUN to realistcally point and shoot away at bad
guys!!!! Your goal is to.... by foot, by snowmobile, or even by helicopter to
race and bring down the terrorists escape plane all the while trying not to get
greased yourself and not kill too many innocent bystanders.
Life meter - a la Virtua Cop
Ammo meter
Time
Score
Possible weapons / items in THIS level include:
AK-47 Machine gun ( ratta tat tat !!!)
RPG Rocket - blows up sections and sometimes triggers fire sprinklers
Fragmentation Grenade - Less destruction than Rocket but dismembers and kills
all the same
Also the weapons / health up items of DIE HARD..
DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE is the THIRD and final Section of the trilogy.
I incorporates the feel of driving of TWISTED METAL.. ie lots -o- explosions
and three camera perspectives...Behind/ in car/ rotating.
Your goal is search and to destroy various bombs planted throughout N.Y.
You'll drive through Central Park, Subways, Chinatown, Crowds of innocent
people. You have to find the bomb before it detonates.. Then outrun the terrorists
before they escape. You can also switch vehicles during the game at SPECIAL
designated parking lots.
The IN CAR view is by far the best in terms of game realism, sound efx.
You can use the SHOULDER buttons of the STANDARD controller to honk you horn
to get people/cars out of your way and to also pull off 90 or 180 turns with
one button press. I'm using the ANALOG Namco NeGcon and find it very easy to
make turns and to keep up with the bad guys... though you must sacrifice the
one button 90 or 180 turns because the NeGcon only has two instead of Four
shoulder buttons. The Behind view is for all those Ridge Racer racers!!
The Rotational view can often make you disoriented to were you really want to
be.
Bomb direction indicator
Parking lot indicator
Score
Compass
Turbo meter
Time meter
Possible PICKUP items are:
TIME- adds time to disarm the bombs
TURBO
LAUNCH-mini bombs that let you catch air
POINTS
EMS- puts and ambulance infront of you to block out traffic
NITRO

CONTROL:
************
CONTROL of the PLAYER is very easy throughout all THREE sections.......
Nothing really above average or negative here.
A stated before.. you and choose any one of the 3 sections from the start.
Music and SFX are seperately adjustable.
Memory Card Management
Blood meter- lets you adjust the level of gore! ( great for over sensitive
parents )
Controller config- diff settings for each of the 3 SECTIONS.
Credits- zzzzzzzzz
Audio- mono or stereo ( why ?? didn't mono die 30 years ago?)
*********************
SPEED:
(weird category ... I know :) )
*********************
The game tempo with the exception of the DIE HARD section, is VERY fast......
Its really like the movies.. in the sense that you don't even have the time to
see who you killed.
FMV scenes are good.
Disk access time is average.
*********************
"REPLAY" ABILITY:
*********************
This game will last you awhile because think of it.... THREE GAME GENRE's in
one game.... And the Individual Sections stand alone from each other...
I'm totally enjoying the shooter section... Its the first gun genre game for
the Playstation (with the exception of HORNED OWL..zzzzzzz :( ) And its
done fairly well.
********************
SOUND
********************
Sound EFX are above average from the thundering explosions to the ratta tat ta
of the sub machine guns and screams of dying innocent bystanders.
The BGM differs from zone to zone and Section to Section... not bad overall.
*********************
DIFFICULTY:
*********************
The game can be (differs for everyone) difficult at first... you have to get
used to the differnt play configs. But once you get the hang of it... it
straight out fun.!!!!
********************
FINAL WORDS:
********************
This is a very impressive game in the sense that it offers THREE diff games in
one.. I personally like adventure games.. DIE HARD. And I also like "Virtua Cop"
type games... DIE HARDER and really like RACING GAMES.... DIE HARD WITH A VENGEANCE.
This games fulfills all three of my likes in one game. W O W!! Well done FOX
ENTERTAINMENT.!!!!!
HAPPY GAMING
