Die Hard Trilogy
PlayStation Review from the Net

Overall: 9/10

Die Hard Trilogy is three separate games in one. The first is a first person
shooter, based on the first movie, where your goal is to eliminate all the
terrorists on each floor. The second is a shooter game, based on the second
movie, and is similar to Virtua Cop. The third is a taxi drivin' game, where
you run around the city trying to disarm bombs, and based on the last movie.
All three are presented in full polygonal real-time 3D worlds.
The programmers were nice enough so you can save your progess in each one
independently (mem card), so you keep on progessing steadily level by level,
instead of starting over every time.

Separate reviews for each game:

Die Hard (First Person Shooter): Rating: 9/10
A very impressive first person overhead view shooter. The 3D environments in
this game are spectacular! From the parking lot to high tech offices to
industrial-like maintenance floors, you will be astounded by the level of
detail and realism that goes into each level.

The game makes very clever use of depth cueing to keep the game running at a
solid 20-30fps. It also cleverly does a "smooth erase" when you are against a
wall (facing away) so you can still see yourself. You will not be
disappointed by the technicalities of this one.

Gameplay is solid. McClane can strafe, roll, turn, walk, jump, shoot and
throw grenades (very similar to Crusader on the PC). However, the
control feels very light and airy... "computerized" in a way. It is very
manageable, but not convincing. But killing the terrorists is nothing less
than satisfying, especially when you get an automatic and start running in the
hallways mowing over piles of terrorists. Or when a pack of 15 baddies start
exiting the elevator, throw a grenade and watch the fantastic transparent
explosions as each of them gets reduced to a pile of blood and guts. Simply
exhiliarting! Kill the civilians, and you will hear an amusing "Sorry Pal".

You can frequently interact with objects in the level. Glass can break,
certain objects can blow up. Not to the degree of Crusader, mind you, but
still fairly decent. You gotta love the explosions.

Die Harder (Virtua Cop Shooter): 8.5/10

Like the first game, the 3D environments are amazing. Actually if you ask me,
Part 2 has the most impressive 3D environment of any game on any system to
date (this includes Crash and M64). The airport terminal is amazing!
Escalators, counters, glass windows, mini-restaurants... it seems nothing has
been compromised in transforming a real-world airport terminal to a 3D
polygonal world. It is farily choppy (15-20 fps) when the camera moves around,
but because you are not in control over the movement, it is not that annoying.

Gameplay is solid as well. It can get pretty hectic if there are many
explosive objects on the screen (ie at the beginning with the bunch of police
cars). The biggest problem is with the control over the crosshair... because
the crosshair is not smooth enough I find it hard to control. Perhaps playing
this with a light gun might help. But the game is very fun, especially with
the flaming shotgun and rockets... mass destruction is on the order. The
explosions are equally impressive.

Die Hard With a Vengeance: 9.5/10

Perhaps the most fun of all three games, this one gets you in the driver seat
of a taxi cab and you go around driving in the city looking for bombs. The
first question that should come to mind is: How convincing is the 3D world?
To that I reply: AMAZING! There is enough variation in texture mapping for
you to not notice any duplicate buildings (in fact I haven't noticed ANY yet).
Plus there is always heavy traffic and pedestrians to lavish the scene. Of
course, all this detail sometimes overtaxes the PSX, and the frame rate drops
to a pretty low 10-15fps.

But technicalities aside, the gameplay is great. Most people enjoy running
over the pedestrians, and so do I. It's pretty hectic and blood rushing when
the time ticks down and you're just that close to disarming a bomb (which is
done by simply running over the target). It's also exciting when you have to
chase a "bomb car"... a vehicle which runs around and you have to bump it a
certain number of times. There is variation too.. between every level you go
down to the subway and try to outrun a truck to disarm a bomb, and levels
consist of cities, parks, and so forth.

The is probably on of the best games coming this fall (aside from Tomb
Raider). If I had a choice between Crash and DHT, it would be DHT hands down.
It's simply so much fun! And the best part is... if you're ever bored of one
game, the other two are waiting for you. You can't get any better than that
for $50.
