NCAA GameBreaker 98
PlayStation Review from the Net
NCAA GameBreaker 98 is the best football game for the PSX this year. After much hemming and hawing, this is the decision I have come to. I am big a big fan of all three major football games released prior to GB98 (NFL GameDay 98, Madden 98 and NCAA Football 98). All had some different areas where they excelled: GameDay in graphics, Madden in AI, NCAA in atmosphere and options (customizeable schedules). Unfortunately, as is always the case, they all also had weaknesses: GameDay has AI that seemed a bit cheap and has an overall "sterile" feel about it. Madden has too few plays and the running game is unneccesarily difficult. NCAA has a nasty first half CPU clock management bug, is difficult to defend the pass and has sme money plays in the game. So why do I feel NCAA GameBreaker 98 is the best game of the year? Honestly, it is hard to put my finger on. I just love the way the game feels. Sure, it has problems (I swear, if this game let you play different season schedules I would elevate this game to hall-of-fame status) but overall this is the game I would choose IF I had to choose just one football game. The number of teams is amazing. The stadiums are great (though NCAA is still tops for accuracy). The player animations appear a bit smoother than GameDay 98 and the AI does not seem to be as cheap. There are TONS of plays to choose from. The running game can be pure bliss, the passing game a very good challenge. With the Total Control system, you can make the game as deep as you'd like, control- wise. The graphics are fantastic (LOVE the helmets!) and the sound is above average. With a completely customizeable computer opponent (you can alter his overall intelligence as well as ability to run and pass AND whether he comes at you with the run, pass or a balanced attack), the challenge is always there. The difference between weak teams and powerhouses seems much greater than in NCAA Football 98. And of course, being college football, you can run the triple option! A Fantasy scoring option is included, as well as a custom play maker. Earlier this year, I gave rave reviews to all three of the aforementioned football games. They were well-deserving of the praise then, as they are now. They are STILL fine football games. I can see how people are so incredibly divided over which game is best (don't be fooled by the rhetoric, though; none of these game "suck.") However, for me this game is tops. Graphics: A (A bit more polished than GameDay 98) Sound: B (Same as GD98, basically, with some new chants and music) Control: A (Same innovative system as GD98) Options: B (lots of 'em, but not the important one; custom schedules) Overall grade: A- Wishlist for GB99: -Don't EVEN release this game without a custom shedule maker -"Dynasty" mode, ala NCAA Football 98 -Polish up sounds a bit (use fight songs more!) -Audibles saved from game-to-game -Quarter length adjustable in one-minute increments. - Jim S.
