Jumping Flash!
Review from the Net
This game takes the 3D game (Doom, Wolfenstein) and introduces it to the
platform world (Mario, Sonic, et al). Making for IMHO, one of the most
original games in a while.
Story & Originality: Hmm....your a robot bunny ("Robitt" not to be
mistaken with "Bobitt") and your finding carrots and looking for this
Aloha guy...yeah weird, huh? Your objective is to go through worlds...each
world has three stages. Each stage has 4 carrots (e,x,i,t) which you must
collect before going to the exit and The last stage of each world is a
boss. There's little CG movie scenes with the enemies drinking sake and
complaining when you conquer a world.
So you can runaround in this open 3D enviroment, little frogs and whatnots
are attacking you which you can shoot or jump on. If you look up (R1) you
can see a whole world above you with the sky racing by and platforms where
your carrots lie.
This is where the jumping comes in. There are 3 degrees of jumping. #1 is
the standard jump. #2 is a super jump whereas instead of looking forward
you look down at your feet as the ground goes small. #3 is the same as #2
you just keep going higher. The technique for jumping is this: While going
up, press the jump button again, then while going up (#2), press the jump
button again to go up to #3...as easy as it sounds it does takes a little
practice to get the timing and feel right, when you start to descend, you
can't jump up anymore, and must start at ground (or platform level). Also
watch your target when doing super jumps, this determines where you land.
Graphics: At first glance they seem kinda weak, I think the game creators
spent a lot time with the concept and game play and spent less time
concentrating on flashy graphics (a rare trait indeed). However, some of
the spectacles are amazing, like finding that stonehenge way up in the sky
or going through the amusement park and being inside the tube looking up
at the ocean life. Seeing the game in motion is the good part...my neck
still hurts today from rearing my head back when attempting big jumps to
far-off platforms.
Control, gameplay: Excellent....but there is a small learning curve on
getting the jumping right. When I first played the game I thought it
sucked because the jumping was so inconsistent, until I figured it out (I
better work on those japanese reading skills). And through my pain, I was
able to explain the control to a friend who mastered it in a matter of
minutes.
Difficulty: I don't recall a difficulty setting. The game doesn't get
very hard once you get down the control. However, I only made it to world
3 stage 2, before I started getting whacked on the head (by other people
in the room wanting to play Tekken). There is also a save feature to save
your current world. (Now I'm at World 5-2, ouch!!)
Sound: I liked the music. Kinda of techno-y with some wierd instruments
like bagpipe and such. The sound FX and voice are standard for CD video
games, and it sometimes sounds like he says "oh shit!" (like Fo) when it
gets hit.
Is it worth the $?: I think this is a great game....very original...I
would put #3 out of my 13 games (behind Tekken, Tohshinden), but I don't
think the average gamer whould like it so much....it may be too weird
(read: original).
