Kileak: The DNA Imperative
Review from the Net
I just picked up the last copy of Kileak, the Blood at Game Stuff last night and here are my first impressions of the game after playing for just a couple hours. This game is a 'Doom'-esque rpg that focuses more on exploration than killing (although there's plenty of that too). From what I can surmise, the player is a member of the IPKF (International Peacekeeping Force) who must destroy an alien menace that has infiltrated a base in Antarctica. The intro is incredible fmv and sets the mood for the game perfectly. The object of the game I guess is to secure or destroy the base. The graphics of the base itself are better than doom. The walls, ceiling and floor are light-sourced rendered and the effect is that the whole base seems to be alive. This game is creepier than anything I've ever played. The atmosphere is so thick I had to go turn on a light last night cause it was freakin' me out. The music is intense and makes the game a hell of a lot scarier. Now I want you to understand that I'm not the kind of person who gets scared at horror movies but this game absolutely terrified me - I swear to God I thought something was going to jump out at me around every corner (and it usually did!) but when it didn't it was even scarier. The game doesn't scroll as fast as Doom and also you can't go around corners as easily, but actually this fits the plot of the game because the player is in gigantic body armor that would make movement very awkward. One wonderful feature is that the movement actually improves as you play because as you progess in the game you can download new versions of your mech-armor OS software, allowing you to move faster and shoot faster too. So far I've gotten to the fourth level, which is 'known' level of the base. Beyond the fifth level I believe is where it will start getting really nasty because then you will have extended beyond the base as it had been built. The aliens (or robots) I have encountered on the first four levels have not really been that scary (compared to doom monsters), primarily because they are polygon based. However I believe these are just security devices for (whatever) lives below the fifth level. There also are many weapons to get (as in Doom) and I have only found two so far. Anyway, in short, in considering the music, the graphics, the gameplay, this is one of the most intense gaming experiences I've ever had. And I thought I'd gotten too mature to enjoy games like I had as a kid; thank God for Playstation!
