Lemmings 3D
Review from the Net
I'm playing Lemmings 3D for some days now and I have mixed feelings
about it.
On one side it has great 3D graphics (incl the unique "virtual lemming
mode"), great sound, cute looking lemmings and basically nice puzzles.
Furthermore it has a replay feature which makes playing much more fun
compared to Lemmings 2D (You don't have to do the same thing over and
over if You make a mistake at the end of a level), after each
"difficulty stage" You see a nice FVM sequence. The level design of
the most levels is quite funny just as it was in L2D. (including
e.g. "Alien" levels looking a bit like Doom). The game can be used
with the normal PSX joypad which works remarkably well after a (long
long) phase of getting used to it. Control and several other
settings can be changed and saved to a memory card (one setting/log
of completed levels takes one place on it).
On the other side having lemmings run around in 3D instead of 2D makes
things much more complicated in some levels - in Lemmings 2D every
level contained about 10 approaches which didn't work and 1 or 2 which
would. Now You can have thousands of ideas that possibly could work
(You can have Your lemmings turn left/right almost everywhere in some
levels) and again only very few will let You succeed. The game has a
"teleport" feature which I don't like too: When there are 10 teleports
around You don't know which one is connected to which one. You end up
trying every single teleport. Furthermore the font displaying the
available number of lemmings is so small that You won't be able to
distinguish 1 and 2 on a normal TV. Not funny.
All in all I think Lemmings 3D is very very nicely done but I just
don't enjoy playing it as much as I enjoy playing Wipeout or
Rayman. If You like puzzle games You probably will get what You
want with L3D. I don't regret having bought it but I'm not anywhere
as much "in awe" with this game as I was with Wipeout.
And now some numbers:
Graphics: 85% (not perfect but close to)
Sound: 100% (couldn't be done better IMHO - cute lemming voices,
appropriate music, all in dolby surround (couldn't
check this but the game has a "in dolby surround"
screen)).
Handling: 10% during the first hour, 80% afterwards (with the Joypad)
Fun: 70% (my entirely subjective impression).
Hope this helps a bit.
