Lemmings 3D

Overall A-
The graphics have retained the cartoon cuteness of the original while
moving into a much higher definition 3D world. The only complaints I
have are that just making blocks disappear when destroyed is kind of a
copout. I would like to have seen some actual damage blocks. I also
don't like the lemmings exploding into tinier lemmings.
The sound is excellent, complete with lemming voices ala the
Chipmunks, and a wide variety of level music in Dolby Surround. The
looping on the music could be better implemented (it seems to just
stop in the middle, pause for a few seconds and then start over).
The interface screens are intuitive and limited to the necessities and
appropriately bright and colorful, with the Chipmunkesque lemming
voice audibilizing your selections. Memory card implementation is
great, retaining a complete history of all levels, completed, number
of lemmings saved, and time to completion.
Game controls are tough to learn, but effective once you get used to
them. The one big missing feature is the ability to tilt cameras up
or down. When you combine this with the complete uselessness of the
overhead map, getting a complete idea of what a level looks like can
be very difficult. Camera tilt would have made a good replacement for
the almost completely useless (although cute) "virtual lemming cam".
Its nice to see a PSX game that does not fall into the overwhelming
array of console shooters, driving games, fighting games, sports sims,
etc. This game is completely original (except of course for
"Lemmings" itself).
If you loved the original "Lemmings" the way I did, you will
definitely like "Lemmings 3D". If you don't like puzzle games, you
will definitely hate it.... The puzzles are solid (so far), although
there do seem to be an almost overwhelming number of possibilities on
some of them, and the lemmings are just as pathetic as ever.
