MLB 98
Review from the Net

Perhaps this is a bit repetitive from previous posts, but consider it as an
additional opinion. In comparing TP&MLB, the advantages that MLB holds are
game play and speed of play.

TP is far superior to MLB in graphics, stadiums, announcing, sound effects,
uniforms, etc. You simply couldn’t ask for a presentation than TP gives us.
It state of the art as of this date.

MLB has FAR better game play. The field is larger, and not so narrow like TP.
You can hit gappers, have time to think in the field, unlike TP where unless
the ball is hit VERY close to the fielder, you really don’t have much chance.
You can turn "around the horn" double plays in MLB, which is virtually
impossible in TP, and things that are supposed to happen do actually happen.
You get a wide variety of angles and arcs as the balls leave the bat unlike TP
where it feels like everything is scripted and the play result is one of 15
different pre-determined outcomes. The batter cursor is a great compromise
for somebody like me who is getting on in years (37) and can’t handle a pure
batting cursor, I can even handle this one and enjoy it to the point that I
could safely say that anyone who chooses not to use it is missing out on a
vital part of the game. I never thought I would play anything other than the
timing swing games like TP

Another issue (that I have yet to hear mentioned) is that while I haven’t put
a stopwatch to it, I am quite certain that MLB plays in approximately 40% less
time than TP. You don’t notice it in TP while you are listening to some cute
commentary by Buck or a funny sponsors message, you are waiting for the guys
to stroll up to the plate and waiting to get ready to pitch. It is just a few
seconds, but it adds up over a whole game.

In summary, if you think TP is a great game and you enjoy the game play, then
save your money on MLB. If you crave improved play and shorter game times,
then give it a try. I am sad that a beautiful game like TP is going to sit on
my shelf or go to Funcoland, because my number one priority is game play. I
hear MLB has bugs in league play and statistics. I don’t have the time for
leagues so I don’t have any experience in this area. I don’t claim that MLB
has all the game play as it should be. It still needs improvement. I am just
saying that it has the best play to date. I have played VR and Grand Slam and
feel that each of them has better game play than TP, but MLB is still at the
top. We’ll see how Bottom of the 9th compares. If you want to sit down and
play a fun, intuitively easy to control game with logical outcomes, this is
the game for you.

It’s funny. I bought MLB because a friend was coming over to visit, and I
bought it from Babbage’s who allows returns as I thought we would play TP and
MLB just for the variety, but I would return MLB the next day. We ended up
playing TP once and stayed with MLB for the rest of the night, and I can’t
wait to get back to it. I never really had that feeling with TP as well done
as it is. Yes, all the little irritating things that people are beginning to
bring up are probably absolutely correct, but this game is still the most fun,
and that’s what its all about.
