NFL GameDay 97
PlayStation Review from the Net
After months of being subjected to the Insanely stupid AI of Madden, I finally graced my PSX with the end all be all of football games. Madden does win the presentation award.....but then again, we don't buy football games for presentation. This is as good a football game as I've ever played....if you want real football and not the heave and catch of Madden...this is it. The advanced moves are initially difficult to use, but once you adjust they are excellent. The Forearm Shiver move can literally lay out a WR at the line of scrimmage, and the High Tackles can be Brutal. The Stiff Arm with Speed Burst is excellent, and if you haven't tried it, lateralling during Kickoff Return is a riot. The dropping of the Shoulder during Speed Burst is excellent if used correctly allowing you to gain those extra 2 yards. I've only used the Double Spin once (during a kickoff), and it worked....how bout that? I tried to jump over the Goal Line.....and boy did I get stuffed. Gameday 97 as before requires you to let your plays develop which makes it even more realistic...no more totally manually reversing the play and gaining 50 yards like in Madden. And the computer definitely adjusts to your playstyle, recognizing defensive sets it can take advantage of. The passing game is not prone to the tipups of last year, but the computer is ultra aggressive in pass defense at times and will royally clock you if you just sit there. Also the addition of extra Special Teams plays, like Cover and Protect definitely make up for the lack of such plays in MADDEN 97 (Can you say Shotgun, Lower Left play, Circle Receiver for 2 point PATS all the time or 35 yards??), so 2 point plays are not easy to achieve. I've just begun to fiddle with the Total Control Passing, and this is what I think really sets GAMEDAY apart from all the rest. Is your best receiver triple covered?? Want to try and pass to him anyway?? That's where TOTAL CONTROL PASSING really comes into use....in tight passing formations, or where your receivers need to alter their routes. GAMEDAY 97 has the most adjustable gameplay of any football game ever. If you like MADDEN type control (Skating), you can even adjust player control to that. Also the fact that Easter Eggs are revealed after every victory so your teams abilities can improve over the course of the season is an excellent idea. I however don't know where to input them yet (I assume in create a player somewhere). Gameday 97 is definitely the most realistic football simulation yet with an excellent play book and real defensive sets. If you want a real challenge, and a game where you can appreciate the real aspects of football, this should be your choice. If you want high score fests, loose control, nice FMV, basically arcade style football without realism....Madden should be your choice. -- Checkout the TEKKEN 2 WWW SITE....
