NHL Face-Off
Review from the Net
Wow, another great sports title. Even more Wow---another great sports game not from EA. Faceoff is essentially just another chapter in the EA NHL series, except it isn't made by EA. One or more of the guys that made the EA classic are responsible for this version though. The game looks, and plays, just like the NHL series, but goes a lot farther than the PC and Genesis versions in terms of gameplay. (I don't mention the SNES version because it blows). You have 4 playable views, of which 3 are great, the 4th (the closeup) is not that great. The sounds are fine, the controls are great, and the difficulty can be changed: Rookie, Veteran, All-Star. I am quite good at the NHL series, so it was easy for me on the Rookie setting, challenging on the Veteran setting, and I have not yet won a game on the All-Star setting. First thing I did was create the greatest player of all time---Kent Frechette of course! I released one of Boston's forwards and immediately signed Mr. Frechette. I jumped into the season (which is saved to the mem card), and lost my first game on the All-Star difficulty, but had a blast playing nonetheless. Scoring goals on the Rookie setting is a breeze, plus the computer scores quite easily as well. I've seen someone complain that there were no one-timers, but there are. The back of the box mentions it, but there is not one mention of them in the manual (just another illustration of the fact that game manuals are becoming a dying art.) Just pass to a teammate and hit shoot right before the puck arrives...just like in NHL Hockey. Perhaps EA caught a glimpse of this one coming and therefore canned their effort. Who knows? I like this game a lot more than I do Gameday, which I think is an excellent sports title also. This one is a definate keeper! Kent Frechette
