PGA Tour 96
Review from the Net
Okay. First, this is only a so-so game. Personally, I was
expecting alot more from a PS golf game AND EA. There just
doesn't seem to be a whole lot of effort here. The graphics
have their good points: for instance, they are certainly
better than any 16-bit game ( of course ). The fly-bys aren't
too bad...but the pixels are a little too noticeable on both
the fly-bys and the FMV of the golfers/courses. Certainly when
compared to some of the other PS FMV. The graphics while
playing can be down-right horrendous. When you get close to
things like trees that look like crap. A total cut and paste
job full of pixels. I KNOW the PS can do ALOT better. The
trees don't even look like they are growing out of the
ground..I dont know about you but I have never seen a tree
with a flat bottom. Ick.
The control also leaves a bit to be desired. Most golf games I
have played I can consistantly hit shots in the upper 200s.
Anyone who knows golf games knows on the swing meter they
always put an overswing 'red area' in which you can add more
power but at the cost of control over the swing. I have never
cared, always raping the red area and never really noticing
any lack of control on drives. Well, not in PGA 96. In fact
the swing meter is VERY unforgiving. If you go into the red
area you can kiss control good-bye. Once you do hit in
overswing and the meter starts to go back down it does so by
'jumping' back down in increments. Its almost impossible to
hit a shot straight using overswing. This is probably the most
annoying part of the game. And much like everyone else I have
had alot of trouble scoring low. The putting isn't too bad
actually. Alot of people have been complaining about it...but
the only real trouble is judging the break, but it can be
done.
I expected alot more frills with this game. Especially with
the effort being put into Madden to make it have a very
"television broadcast like" atmosphere. I was hoping this game
would in turn be given that. But nope. Pretty much a straight
forward golf game. In fact the announcer only comes out of his
reclusion during fly-bys, FMV and putting sequences. It would
have helped alot to have him there through the entire hole.
I am going to keep the game though. Basically because if I
returned it there would be nothing I really want to exchange
it for...if there were more games out it would be a different
story. I am sure if you really like golf you'll like it. But
it certainly isn't anything but PGA 486 ( which I already
own). The only thing I like more is that I now get to play on
a big-screen without the access times ( that do show on my
Pentium 60 at times ).
