PO'ed
Review from the Net
I have had the chance to play PO'ed on the Playstation and just wanted to say it is great. I love this type of game and really got into PO'ed when it was on the 3DO. THere are some interesting differences in the PlaystatIon version that makes it the best version yet. First of all though, for those of you that don't know, it is a doom style game but all the rooms and levels are huge and you have the ability to use a jetpack to explore around. Some are so big like the shuttle bay where you fly around in an empty shuttle bay then explore and find another bay but this one has a shuttle docked in it THAT YOU CAN GO INTO and fight more monsters! The game has a lot of creative new gameplay features. You can jump, fly (w/ jetpack), run, backflip, double jump (with skill) and have a ton of weapons at your disposal. The jump is quiick and just high enought to be very effective yet not seem like a jump superman would make. The backflip gives you a quick 180 degree turn but it shows the view as if you would be doing a real flip. The floor, sky and walls all twist accurately. You can walk up ladders and when you do your view angles up and while walking up you can press left or right to angle your view as you walk up. It is very intuitive and really feels realistic. Some of the differences from the 3DO version are a much better frame rate. This makes the game much more smooth (it wasnt to shabby on the 3DO though). There is also an addition of a Boot Camp level that acts as a training mission. It has regenerating enemies and lots of ammo to experiment with. You are exposed to the backpack and a few weapons and can just practice. THe training level (Boot Camp) is a nice idea because it gives you a feel for the game adn exposes some of the more powerful weapons so you know what to expect latter in the real game in the latter levels. Also, a lot of the 3D graphics were worked on so there is less stitch lining between polygons. Overall it is a great port of an excellent game. I should add though that part of the humor of the developers was to make the main character the cook of a wiped out marine troop. So in the beginning you start out with a frying pan. It is hilarious to slap aliens with this frying pan but it is a short range weapon and can get frustrating in the begining. With this in mind try to get up to some of the better weapons before judging the game. After the laser pistol the weapons are just plain bliss and are really fun just to let loose. If you like doom games, give this a try. If you like action games give it a try. Even if you don't like doom games you may like this one because of the vastness of the levels and the new element of the backpack. By the way, the backpack idea was first implemented in PO'ed for the 3DO before Duke Nukem 3D and the back pack works much better in PO'ed than it does in Duke Nukem. It is not cumbersome or hard to use at all! Anyway... Erin
