Return Fire
Review from the Net

Just picked up Return Fire at EB yesterday. (WOW I broke myself away from
Resident Evil for a whole day!!!)

Object:
1 player---it's a race against the clock to infiltrate the enemy
lines, find your flag, and return to base.
2 player vertical split screen----Race against your friend to
capture their flag before they capture yours.

You use 4 vehicles to do this:

helicopter (good for reconnaissance (sp?). light armor,
shells and rockets (2 rocket hits to destroy tower). Good for locating
your enemy's flag. Also, rockets are the only thing that can destroy
mines. (good if your so called "friend" mines your bridge)

Tank- faster than ASV but lighter armored. You can
rotate your turret 360 degrees using the r1 and l1 buttons. Also has
weaker shells (5 hits to destroy turret)

ASV (Armored Support Vehicle)- What war game wouldn't be
complete without a SCUD launcher? Very heavily armored, 3 hits to kill a
tower...but so damn slow!!! Only vehicle that can lay mines.

Humvee-well, it looks more like a jeep. Very fast, only
has grenades, and well....one hit to blow your ass to smithereens. You
can inflate the tires to float on water though. Only vehicle that can
carry a flag.

Each vehicle has both surface to surface and surface to air offense
capabilities, except for the helicopter, of course (air to surface and
air to air. These are fired from two separate buttons (square = surface
attack, triangle = air attack.)

You begin with 3 of each (on some maps, fewer). basically, you wander
around Look for your flag. Blow a path, and go get it with your humvee.
Sound boring...YES!!!, Is it boring....HELL NO!!!

Strategic elements play a big role. Stay too long in one spot...Drones
will kick your butt. Go to far out to sea? Nuclear submarine with
heatseakers will kick your butt. Enemy find your flag? No
problem...break out a humvee, go move it before they get back with their
humvee to take it. It's fun to Jump in you humvee, grab your flag, take
it out to sea, and watch as your friend tries to find your moving flag.
When they take out their humvee into the sea to look for it, jump in a
helicopter and blow 'em out of the water.

Ok.... pros and cons

Pros: Kick ass music (classical). "The ride of the Valkyries" plays
while you're in your helicopter. "Flight of the Bumblebee" for the
humvee" and the great "hallelujah!) for when you find a flag is revealed.

Good control. You can either play the standard (up is forward) or
change it to generic (up is towards the top of the screen).

Very addicting. Picked it up at 2:00, home at 2:30, played until
1:30 in the morning (yeah...I need to get a life.)

Over 100 levels, mem card/password. The box says 9 war zones, but
I have yet to see those (unless they mean city, air, sea, land,
jungle..etc.

Good attention to detail/also humerous. Blow up a building,
people run out throwing grenades at you. No problem, run over them in
the tank (cool squishing sound) Zoom in and the people are lying their
in a puddle of blood still clutching their little rifles. most buildings
crumble rather than explode (very cool) and their are both gas and
refueling stations throughout the level. There are also hospitals, but I
cannot figure if the repair your armor or not. Anyone know?

Cons: Graphics. Don't seem to be up to snuff with 32 bit. Cartoony
look. Doesn't bother me though.

Damage control. There is no damage meter. When you do get hit,
the screen radar screen flashes a circle. The bigger it is, the closer
you are to dying. But since I play without the radar screen on most of
the time, I can't finish killing a bunch of people, switch on the radar,
and tell if I need to go back to my base or not. (going back to base
repairs, refuels, and rearms you). I could if I'm willing to take a hit
to see, but what if it's my last hit.

Control on some vehicles (helicopter) are hard to get ahold on.
Humvee goes to damn fast to control, but this is a plus, since it can
only take one hit also has no radar (you better know where that flag is
and hope your enemy didn't move it between a bunch of turrets..

You can only have one vehicle out at a time. I would love to be
able to take out a tank and leave it by the gate to my city, then take
out another and go trash some enemy stuff. Then if I saw my enemy
approaching my city, I could switch to the first tank and defend it.
(those towers just don't do a good enough job.) Instead, you have to
drive all the way back to the bunker, by that time, most of your city's
probably rubble.

last con: To addicting, I have my studies too.

overall: graphics: 80%
          sound: 95%
          control: 90%
          gameplay: 90%
         replay: 98%

Later,
S-Man
