Street Fighter Collection
Review from the Net
I've been asking my wife for this game ever since I heard it was coming to the PSX. Lo and behold, the day it comes out she brings it home! The game didn't disappoint. It includes Super Street Fighter II, Super Street Fighter II Turbo, and Street Fighter Alpha II Gold, seen for the first time in the US. Graphics (10 out of 10) Why a 10? No, it's not an eye-popping 3D masterpiece, but it is arcade perfect. The characters are bigger than what we saw on the SNES, namely in the "Super" series. Detailed backgrounds (especially in Alpha 2 Gold) really add to the game. The Super series differs from the Alpha game because it's less cartoon-like. This is not a bad thing, just noticable. The Super series doesn't boast as much animation as Alpha 2 Gold does, but this is accurate to their arcade parents. Sound (6 out of 10) This is the one and only area that disappointed me. The rockin' tunes from the arcade simply weren't ported over to the PSX, which is surprising considering it's CD-ROM. The music is hardly noticable over the sound effects, even if you have it turned up all the way. This is especially true in the Super series, and less so in Alpha 2 Gold. Music from the Super series sounds like cheap MIDI music on a PC when you don't have a Wavetable card. Control (9 out of 10) What can I say? I love the controll!!! My Vega "pick 'em up and smash 'em into the ground" move worked flawlessly the first time I tried it! However, a word to the wise: get an arcade fighter stick or it's going to be a nightmare trying to pull the moves off on the PSX pad. At any rate, the control is outstanding in all three games. Overall (9 out of 10) All of you young folks out there into the 3D fighters may not like old-school Street Fighter, but remember: had it not been for this game, you'd be twiddling your thumbs. This game is a butt-kicking good time that I'm sure my brother and I will play for hours into several weekend nights! The only thing I'm stumped about: why include Super SF II when Super SF II Turbo is so much better? Oh, well...if you are a SF fan, this game is a must-have. -Bob Blandeburgo blande@erols.com
