Tekken
Review from the Net
Excuse me while I delurk for a few minutes. We recently got Tekken in at our college arcade, and as it's ONLY $0.25, it's played quite a lot. Last night, My girlfriend, myself, and two other friends went down to play. We were on the machine for two hours. Here are my observations about the game, and I hope they hold true for the PSX version. First, this game has excellent, highly enjoyable gameplay. Otherwise, we wouldn't have played it for 2 hrs. =) Using pull back block rather than a defend button, and using "limb" buttons instead, was, IMHO, a great idea. It helps with my second point: A low learning curve. Compared to the vast majority of fighters out there, Tekken is easy to learn how to play. It's a good "spaz" game. Now that we have a moves list, perhaps we'll do better. I kind of like the fact that someone who has never played the game can come in and very possibly whip an "expert" player's ass. =) A third point that draws people to the game is the bits of humour in the game and the absolutely cruel looking throws. For the former, Jack's victory animation where he beats his chest and falls over is a good example, and either of Law's two throws is a good example of the latter. The game has it's drawbacks, of course. The graphics are a bit raw at times, when up close attacks/throws are performed on certain characters, and the program has a hard time with overlapping polygons. Has anyone noticed if this is a problem in the home version? The music is nice, as are the backgrounds, but again IMHO, they are nowhere near the look of VF2. At times the camera angle swings to a bad angle, when distances between characters are more than, say, 15ft. But this is very momentary. I love the game. My girlfriend especially loves the game. She whooped all our butts with Nina, and even whooped most of the computer's butt. I think any game that she can play and enjoy that much is worth purchasing. When the Playstation FINALLY comes out in the US, I'll be purchasing this game with it, along with a second controler. I think a lot of die hard "expert" gamers will dislike the game, partly due to the spaz factor and other things, but many might enjoy it as it is just plain fun. That's my two cents, quarter, whatever. Comments? Questions? My girlfriend and I are going to go have a rematch now. =) Wolf
