Triple Play '98
Review from the Net
I've played about 10 games of Triple Play 98 and so far am generally impressed. I will give my 2 cents worth on the drawbacks and good points of the game. For informational purposes I played all 10 games on all-star level with the Reds in season-mode. Drawbacks: 1) Runner AI is poor. The runner will go back to third as soon as you throw home from the outfield, even if the outfielder is on the warning track and the runner is 2/3s of the way home. Also, you can con the runner into advancing a base and easily being thrown out by simply running the fielder of the ball a certain distance away from the runner. Finally, the runners do not tag enough and when they do they get thrown out. 2) Fielder AI is poor. The computer automatically throws to the lead base on a force out. For example, I had bases loaded and 2 outs; I hit a ball up the middle and the shortstop fielded the ball right next to 2nd base yet threw home and failed to get my any runners out. This happens quite a bit on infield hits. 3) This is yet another game in which it is too easy to throw runners out on balls hit to right field. I do this at least 3 times a game. 4) It is way too easy to pick off runners on 3rd. If you wait long enough the runner will take a big enough lead where you can pick him off. *This list of drawbacks does not destroy the game because in most cases the player of the game can simply play fair and not take advantage of the AI's idiocy (ie--do not pick off runners, do not fool runners, etc.). Good Points: (Keep in mind I hate EA's games and think they have been a joke for the Playstation) 1) Graphics and sound are outstanding. The play-by-play commentary is not terribly annoying and is generally accurate. The announcers actually give game-specific commentary throughout the game. The music and organ kick butt. The graphics and movement are the best for any game on any system to date. The numbers and names on the uniforms are very clear. 2) The options are incredible. I do not know where to begin, there are so many cool options. Trade player, in-depth create player, free agency (with quite a few REAL minor-leaguers and free agents such as Kevin Mitchell), 4 modes of play, different season and inning lengths, injuries, expansion teams and stadiums, expansion draft, and the list goes on... 3) The fielding in this game can be made quite challenging depending on the view you use. Also, you can choose between an aggressive or normal throw. I have overthrown my players a few times with the aggressive throw. My created "Deion Sanders" actually climbed the fence trying to rob Ron Gant of a homerun--cool! 4) The STATS are awesome! No psx game has seen this many stat categories. It is as close to Hardball 5 on the pc as you are going to get where stats are concerned. 5) PLAYER OF THE GAME ala 3D Baseball. Nice! 6) Nice pitching interface. 7) Batting is not overly easy like TP 97. I generally like a cursor and almost did not give this game a try due to the lack of a batting cursor like is seen in BOT 9th. However, lack of a cursor does not kill this game. There is an optional rectangle for both pitchers showing where the ball is moving to. This is almost better than a cursor because it is more challenging trying to move the D-pad in the 'general' direction of the pitch rather than the 'specific' location. 8) Any number of games can be quickly simulated if you do not want to play certain games. 9) The amount of control and options you have over runners and batters is unprecedented on the psx. There is everything from drag bunts to double steals to dancing around while on base--letting the computer take over your batter while you mess with the pitchers nerves. 10) Actual batter stances and pitching styles. 11) You can play with up to 6 teams in the same season for those of you who like to compete with friends in the same season. I wish SONY would add this feature to their sports titles. I have to give EA a lot of credit for this effort. Maybe this is a sign of good things to come from EA. This title is for the die-hard as well as casual baseball fan. I was eagerly awaiting BOT 9th 2, but I do not know if Konami will be able to top Triple Play 98. There are so many nice features and nuances of this game that it would take me all night to list them. I highly encourage you to run out and purchase this game (By the way, I bought mine at Waldensoftware for $39.99). RAS
