Twisted Metal 2
PlayStation Review from the Net
Twisted Metal 2 is the best (non fighter) two player game available for the PSX. The first Twisted Metal had 2 or 3 very good levels, TM2 has 8 excellent levels (plus several 3 hidden levels). Some of the levels are big arenas (los angeles, moscow), some are city streets (hong kong, paris), there is an Iceberg level (Antarctica) and a volcano level (amazonia) and a skyscraper level (New York). Almost all the levels appear to have additional areas that can be accessed by blowing up something with a remote bomb. In the Paris level you can blow up the Eiffel Tower and then drive across the bridge that the fallen tower makes and in Antarctica the ice collapses all around you. There are 12 total vehicles (plus 2 hidden), the original TM vehicles plus several new cool vehicles: a formula one car that has an amazing tornado spin special attack and a bulldozer that grabs other cars and slams them to the ground (hilarious to watch). There is also a guy attached to two huge wheels with a shock wave special attach. In the two player game some of the levels are horizontal split screen and others are vertical split screen (no linkup support). There is three viewpoints and there is a map and rearview mirror that can be toggled on and off (Select Left/Right). There are several new weapons: a ricochet bomb that bounces off walls, a napalm weapon that shoots in an arc and catches vehicles on fire. TM2 seems to be more intense than the original game. Graphics 9.0 The graphics are much improved. The explosions are bigger, the vehicles roll when hit and explode into the air. The backgounds are much more interactive. There are times when you get graphic glitches at corner of walls (see througth walls) but this does not distract from the game. I noticed some occasional ramdom horizontal lines but they are probably only noticable because I am using the higher resolution S-Video adapter and Sony XBR TV. Sound 10.0 Music 9.0 The sound effects are great. The music is very good but toned down a little bit (The music is not loud at the menu screens). I loved the original Twisted Metal theme song. There are several songs in Twisted Metal 2 that are variations on original theme song and have good metal rhythm. Each level has a different music track that is appropiate for the level. Control 9.5 The control takes some getting use to but after an hour I was screaming around corners, turbo boosting down straight aways, and doing 180 degree spin turns. Replayability (10.0) I didn't buy the first Twisted Metal game (big mistake: I rented it 4 or 5 times and took it back late each time). With the two player split screen levels there is tons of replay value. Summary 9.5 Twisted Metal 2 is an exciting and fun game. As a single player game it is excellent and the 2 player game will keep you playing for a long time. You can really get pumped up running over cars with your monster truck and running for your life when you are out of ammo. There is a little bit of racing and a little bit of mass destruction involved. Frantically searching for ammo and then blasting the other vehicles before they blast you. Rick Worley
