Wing Commander III
Review from the Net
Video quality: It's nice, but suffers from that weird flickering effect that plagued some of the earlier PSX games. Story: Wonderful, of course. This is Wing Commander here. A bit of the acting is a little stiff in places, but overall very good. Graphics: No cockpit views, which will annoy some people, but not me. I hated the cockpit view and never used it anyway, because it restricts visibility. Ships look decent, but a comparison to the PC version does show a distinct decrease in detail on the textures. Music: For being a digitized soundtrack, it doesn't sound very good at all. WC3 on the PC with a half-decent wavetable soundcard sounds considerably better. The music is well-composed, but the execution in this version could have used more work. Control: It controls well, but it does get choppy at times, particularly when near capital ships or when there are a LOT of fighters close by. The button scheme is a tad cumbersome at first, but one gets used to it, and it becomes second nature. There is a bit of a learning curve though. Also, there is an annoying pause in mid-flight when new ships show up. Other stuff: This game is missing the ground missions. What you see instead is an FMV scene of your fighter going down and taking out whatever installation you were after, etc. So ground missions are always deemed successful, but you don't get to play them. This is a big negative to me. The ground missions are a pain to fly, but they are fun. Overall: 7 out of 10, I'd say. It's a good game, and worth the money if you can't get ahold of the PC version, but it could have been done much better. I find it hard to believe that the PSX couldn't handle the ground missions. The main thing this version has over the PC version is the much-improved video quality. It's not as pixelly and doesn't have that weird afterimage effect that the PC version does (a problem which was, thankfully, fixed and then some in WC4). It's a good effort, but the end result feels a bit rushed. -Deuce
