Wing Commander III
Review from the Net

First off, if you played the P.C. version, there is no doubt the P.S.
version comes _much_ closer then the 3do's did.
Is it better or as good as the P.C. version?. No way, but at least
most of the P.C. features have been included.

Now, i know the on ship loading time in the P.S. version is ridiculas,
and i know the fmv in the cockpit from the Kilrati and you're friends
is shortened up a bit, and i know there is no shown cockpit.
And the control is not as smooth at times.

However the P.S. version has many more advantages then disadvantages
then it's 3do counterpart.

You want reasons why , here's some:

1) The resolution in the P.S. version is horizontally greater. It runs
at 640*240(or 224..whatever).
This is what origin techs have constantly been saying.
And if you compare both versions, you will easily see the P.S. has
much sharper graphics for both the regular and cap. ships.
----i'm not sure on this, the P.S. looks sharper when i compared the
two versions, so i'll assume the origin reps are correct---

2) Just like in the P.C. version, after destroying a capital ship, you
get a floating burnt-up one in it's place.
This really adds to the realism of the game, and i was _hugely_
dissappointed the 3do's version did not include it.

3) You also get realistic looking graphics when you blow up a enemy
regular ship, not some cheesy quick blow-up "flame".

4) Because of 2 and 3, the cd gets constantly accessed and it slows
down the game somewhat. This is evident when there's many explosions
happining at the same time, as well as many on screen ships.
It is concievable, that the 3do's version ran and controlled more
smoothly simply because these features were not even included in the
game.
And personally i'd rather have them, and have a little loss in speed
and control.

5) The P.C. had a power distribution feature( ie..giving more power to
you're shields while taking away some from you're engine), which the
P.S. also has.
The 3do again lacked this feature, making in space combat less
stategic.

6) The ability to fly through you're own and the Kilrati's cap. ships.
And although this feature should have been done _much_ better, at
least it's in this version.

Again, the 3do lacked this feature.

7) The P.S. include the P.C's feature of being able to shoot the
turret guns that are on the cap. ships.
If you can destroy these gun turrets, the enemy ship is at you're
mercy.

This is a _must have_ feature, and again the 3do lacked it.

8) There's a much higher polygon count in the cap. ships and although
you may get a "disappearing" problem when very close to the ship, this
problem is _much_ worse in the 3do version.

9) The 3do version has lame asteroid bit-mapped graphics(same as Super
W.C.-3do), while the P.S. version has polygonal asteroids.
These asteroids look more realistic, and the P.C. version also had
poly's.

10) The P.S. version lets you have the ability of rear turrets on a
couple of you're ships, just like the P.C. version.

The 3do again lacked this feature.

Now, if you include these features in-flight, you will no-doubt have
some problems with control. If you listen to the P.S., the cd is
constantly being accessed for new data during space combat, and with
only 2mb of internal ram it's near impossible to include all these
features...along with the same smooth 3do-like in-cockpit fmv.
That's why the fmv was cut short at times.

At least in this version, origin _tried_, in the 3do version, they
wimped out and left these features out, and personally these features
should not be options..but necessities.

Now, origin did mess up with the pathetic on-ship fmv's loading time.
It's ridiculas to wait 1-2 seconds for a screen to change and see a
damn "loading" icon instead. At least they could have lft the last
static screen for those 1-2 seconds, but _never_ put a "loading" icon
in it's place, as it takes away alot from the "realism" of the fmv.

Also, since i'm on this fmv topic, where the hell do people see a
"grainy" fmv?. Get a grip people, It's no doubt sharper then 3do's.

I _love_ this version, simply because _finally_ origin decided to add
most or all of the P.C. features even at the cost of some slow down or
some minor control problems.

Of course, the P.C. version is the _ideal_ version for WC3, however
you're comparing a 8mb Pentuim or 486/66 with a 2mb P.S.
When you're dealing with in flight fmv, memory intensive features, and
more animated destroyed ships, it's hard to fit all these in just 2mb
of working ram (and 1mb v-ram) and maintain a silky smooth
control..especially while the cd is being accessed for this data.

But to say the 3do version is better simply because of smoother
in-flight fmv and an added on-screen cockpit(is this really needed
anyway), is simply mind-boggling.

It's not nearly the best the P.S. can do, but for a $300 console with
only 2mb of working ram, at least it resembles the P.C. version.
Something the 3do version did not do....

Phil...

btw: I stated here the advantages of the P.S. WC3 (and there are
more..) and also have been saying the P.S. NFS is graphically better,
and i have always stated reasons and _facts_ as to why.
Other's who disagree, fail to do so. Why?.
